The Toolkit: A Skill-Sharpening Series

This series of workshops is hosted by the Community Research Unit in conjunction with SCIC, the U of R Business and Professional Development and RPIRG. The series aims to teach students and community members skills that can help them with work in community based, and non-profit organizations.

September 13 – Working with the Media

9:00-1:00, including lunch and a snack break

Mainstream media gets swamped by requests from organizations every day, all of whom believe their event is worthy of an interview. How do you plan an event that can stand apart and get the attention of media? It’s all about the pitch! Find out how to best work with media to get your message to the broader public.  Press releases, interview tips and media stunts will all be covered.

October 21 – Social Media

9:00-1:00, including lunch and a snack break

Facilitator: Alec Couros

Social Media can be an effective tool to get your message out and access to new audiences. This hands-on, interactive workshop will teach you how to use free online social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and more.

November 28 – Grant and Proposal Writing

9:00-1:00, including lunch and a snack break

Facilitator: Robert Friedrich

This course is designed for individuals tasked with developing funding proposals to granting agencies to support projects or ongoing programming.  In this course you will learn the essentials of putting together a successful proposal to key funding organizations.  We will train you to think strategically in the development of your project proposal.  As well, you will gain key insights into what funding agencies are looking for in their project submission calls. Finally you will be able to share your current project ideas with the instructor and fellow classmates to gain feedback on your project proposal, in a group learning environment. The bottom line of this course is to get you the resources you need to make things happen in your community, organization, or neighborhood.
