After 5 years of planning, RPIRG is excited to announce the 2019 opening of our campus orchard project! In partnership with the University of Regina, and with financial contributions from Farm Credit Canada, the University of Regina Sustainability and Community Engagement Fund, and the City of Regina, RPIRG will be breaking ground on our campus orchard on Friday May 24th, 2019. Volunteers are needed to help plant over 50 varieties of perennial trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses in the new orchard space.
The campus orchard is an extension of our Green Patch Student Garden project which provides fresh food to students and community members, serves as a model for campus sustainability, and hosts community workshops and student-led research projects every year. “This orchard will contribute to the availability of fresh food on our campus, and spur more fruitful discussions about food security and sustainability” says Krystal Lewis, RPIRG’s executive director, “It is a project that will directly benefit students for decades to come”.
The new orchard will be located on the Dr. Lloyd Barber academic green between the Research and Innovation Centre, Lab Building, and Classroom Building. The volunteer planting day will take place between 9am and 5pm. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. All University of Regina students, staff, faculty, or community members who would like to contribute can email Krystal Lewis at email@example.com to sign up. Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves if they have them. An official campus orchard opening party will take place during welcome week of the fall 2019 semester.
