RPIRG Distributes Over 9,000 Free Seed Packets to Regina Gardeners — and It’s a Blooming Success!

The Regina Public Interest Research Group (RPIRG) has successfully given away more than 9,000 seed packets to over 1,000 people across Regina this spring — empowering residents to grow their own food and take part in a greener, healthier city.

The seed giveaways took place on March 27, May 1, and May 10, with another major distribution at the Regina Horticultural Society’s plant sale on May 17. In total, RPIRG offered approximately 45 different varieties of seeds, including vegetables and herbs.

Each gardener received between 7 to 10 packets of seeds, offering a wide selection to help start or expand their gardens. The seeds ranged from popular staples like beans, corn, and lettuce to more unique varieties like okra, tatsoi, and heirloom cucumbers.

“This initiative is about more than just seeds — it’s about building food security, encouraging sustainability, and growing community,” said RPIRG Executive Director, Tayef Ahmed. “We’re proud to see so many people excited about gardening.

A huge thank you goes out to the amazing volunteers who made this possible — from sorting and labeling to packing and distributing seeds. Their energy, time, and dedication helped bring this initiative to life and ensured it reached over 1,000 households in Regina.

The seed giveaway is part of RPIRG’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability, food justice, and community empowerment.
